Ailyn Perez, Sonya Yoncheva, & Toni Marie Palmtree to Make Role Debuts Leading Metropolitan Opera’s ‘Madama Butterfly’

On January 9, 2026, the Metropolitan Opera will raise the curtain on Puccini’s classic ‘Madama Butterfly.’

Anthony Minghella’s production is set to return for 15 performances, with sopranos Ailyn Perez and Sonya Yoncheva both set to make their role debuts as Cio-Cio San. Conducted by Marco Armiliato, Perez’s run of performances will see her share the stage with tenor SeoJong Baek also making his debut as Pinkerton, Hyona Kim as Suzuki, and baritone Andrzej Filoncyzk as Sharpless.

Yoncheva’s run will be conducted by Carlo Rizzi, and includes tenor Adam Smith as Pinkerton, mezzo Jennifer Johnson Cano as Suzuki, and baritone Quinn Kelsey making his company role debut as Sharpless.

Later in the spring, Perez will return for four more performances, joined by tenor Matthew Polenzani as Pinkerton, as well as Kim and Filoncyzk. The final performance of the production will feature soprano Toni Marie Palmertree making her company debut in the title role.
