Death of Classical has announced two upcoming events ahead of this fall’s premiere of Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek’s opera ‘Lincoln in the Bardo’ at the Metropolitan Opera.
Held across two cemeteries in New York City, the events represent the second collaboration between the Met and DoC. The first will be held, September 25, 2026, at The Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Patrons can experience live music and theatrical performances, before being treated to excerpts from the upcoming opera sung by artists from production. There will also be a conversation with the composer and librettist, moderated by journalist Amanda Petrusich.
The second event will be held on October 15, at Trinity Church, featuring pre-show music and activities such as a tour of the historic cemetery, along with a conversation with the opera creative team.
“Lincoln in the Bardo,’ with its story of grief, memory, compassion, and the profound ways we accompany one another through loss, is a perfect fit for the world of Death of Classical, and the spaces – both physical and metaphysical – where we’ve built our community in over these past ten years,” says Death of Classical Founder Andrew Ousley in a press release. “It’s a gift to be able to share the genius of George Saunders, distilled into the profoundly moving music of Missy Mazzoli (who, for the record, is also a certified death doula) and the wrenching words of Royce Vavrek, and a joy to collaborate once again with our dear friends at the Metropolitan Opera as we invite audiences into the singular spaces of Green-Wood and Trinity Church NYC.”
